Steve Lehman Trio

Lehman is a visionary artist whose singular approaches to composition and performance earned him a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2014 Doris Duke Artist Award. Mentored by alto saxophone giant Jackie McLean, he is a regular collaborator with pianist Vijay Iyer, and has worked extensively with Anthony Braxton, Jason Moran, George Lewis, Tyshawn Sorey, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Meshell Ndegeocello in addition to his career as a bandleader. Lehman’s innovative work as a composer integrates the influences of free jazz, bebop, hip-hop, and the spectral harmony concepts pioneered by composers Tristan Murail and Gérard Grisey, and his lauded Octet received a “Jazz Album of the Year” nod from The New York Times for its 2009 Pi Recordings album Trevail, Transformation and Flow. The follow-up, Mise en Abîme, took “Best New Album” honors in the 2014 NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll. For his most current project, Lehman revisits the clockwork trio he debuted on his 2012 release Dialect Fluorescent for 2019’s The People I Love, which pairs Lehman, Brewer, and Reid with master pianist Craig Taborn.
