Original show description below.

GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter and composer Nico Segal, a versatile artist who made a name collaborating with hip-hop star Chance the Rapper in the group The Social Experiment, leads this Chicago-based quartet that combines his wealth of jazz experience with a passion for hip-hop culture. Formerly known under the stage name “Donnie Trumpet” (which he changed following the 2016 presidential election), Segal was a founding member of indie darlings Kids These Days, later forming The Social Experiment with Chance the Rapper and producer Nate Fox.

Their 2015 debut, Surf, made the Top 10 of The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critics poll and featured contributions from the likes of Janelle Monáe, Busta Rhymes, and Erykah Badu. Segal has been part of a number of high-profile collaborations including work with Kanye West, Andrew Bird and Ed Sheeran, and in 2016, he appeared on Neil Young’s live release Earth and produced Paul Simon’s single “Stranger.” With the Juju Exchange, Segal merges his trumpet, electronics and producer’s art with the lithe piano of Julian Reid, the earth-deep bass of fellow Kids These Days member Lane Beckstrom, and muscular rhythms of Everett Reid into a new, decidedly jazz-based aesthetic. Their new album, Exchange, is Segal’s most personal project, equal parts gritty, melodic, urbane, and funky.
