“The most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years,” (Village Voice) Iyer begins his season residency by inviting two of the jazz world’s most explorative and virtuosic pianists for this exclusive evening of duets, honoring the memory and legacy of the late piano master Geri Allen. Since her emergence on the New York scene in 2001, Kris Davis has been a singular artist whose music lives at the intersection of jazz improvisation and 20th century classical composition. The Vancouver-born Davis was dubbed one of the music’s top up-and-comers in a 2012 The New York Times article titled “New Pilots at the Keyboard,” saying, “over the past couple years in New York, one method for deciding where to hear jazz on a given night has been to track down the pianist Kris Davis.” Craig Taborn established himself as a modern master through five explorative releases and pivotal sideman roles with Chris Potter, Roscoe Mitchell, James Carter, and David Binney. An artist as comfortable in straight-ahead situations as the furthest fringes of the avant-garde, Taborn has always built ensembles that are equally versatile and eclectic. In a recent feature in The New York Times, critic Adam Shatz wrote, “His playing inspires something rare in music today, a sense of wonder.”
ABOUT VIJAY IYER
The brilliant and adventurous pianist and composer Vijay Iyer is a musician who stretches the boundaries of jazz, but has long reached beyond jazz's vocabulary. An artist possessed of a relentlessly searching intellect and awe-inspiring technique, he was the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation’s “genius grant” in 2013 and the “quadruple crown” in DownBeat’s 2012 Critics Poll in the categories of Jazz Artist of the Year, Group of the Year, Pianist of the Year and Album of the Year. Iyer has collaborated with the most creative figures in modern jazz, including Steve Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Ambrose Akinmusire, and John Zorn, among others, and is a member of the visionary collective Fieldwork with saxophonist Steve Lehman and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. He has recorded 15 albums since his debut in 1995, including the acclaimed sessions Historicity (2009), Accelerando (2011), and Break Stuff (2015) featuring his telepathic trio of bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore.
