Original show description below.

The Japanese-born, Los Angeles based pianist, a virtuosic star in the making, returns to SFJAZZ with a night of classic jazz, Latin, world music, and original compositions, backed by her sterling trio including bassist Del Atkins and drummer Bob Breton.

Beginning classical piano at age four in her hometown of Fukui, Mabuchi turned her interest to hip-hop and R&B as a teen, and eventually found her calling after hearing the jazz piano greats during her high school years. The young pianist relocated to Los Angeles in 2010 and released her Vista Records debut, Waves, the following year, followed by an album of original compositions, My Life, in 2014.

Since then, Mabuchi has toured extensively, performing at Disney Hall, the Segerstrom Center, and Washington DC’s Blues Alley, shared bills with a number of high profile artists including saxophonist Branford Marsalis, and continued to record regularly.

Mabuchi’s 2020 project, YUKO, has been followed up by her latest release entitled The Caribbean Canvas, a celebration of Caribbean music and its many roots, mixed with jazz and blues. She calls this presentation Caribbean Jazz, adding to her repertoire of straight ahead, Latin and originals.

Mabuchi is very talented and has a genuine feel for the way jazz is structured, yet free. Her taste is impeccable … [and she] can swing like crazy.
