FOUR SONGS FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY

July 2, 2018 | by SFJAZZ

Louis Armstrong (William Gottlieb Collection)

Happy Fourth of July from all of us at SFJAZZ! To celebrate, we've pulled together four jazz recordings of American patriotic standards performed by a few of our favorite musicians – from Louis Armstrong, who claimed he was born on Independence Day, to Billie Holiday. And if four's not enough, we celebrate more from the Great American Songbook in SFJAZZ Summer Sessions 2018, running July 12-August 19.

1. "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Louis Armstrong (Live at Newport, 1960)

2. "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" by Herbie Mann (Memphis Underground)

3. "America The Beautiful" by Ray Charles (The Dick Cavett Show, 1972)

4. "Yankee Doodle Never Went to Town" by Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra feat. Billie Holiday
