Formed in 2011, The Westerlies are the premier brass quartet working today, with a repertoire of over 50 original compositions, adaptations of music ranging from Duke Ellington and Stephen Foster to Bèla Bartok and György Ligeti, and a history of collaboration with Vieux Farka Touré and Bill Frisell. They draw from a wide array of influences, to say the least – just listen to the group's self-titled sophomore album that dropped October 7!
With the self-described "accidental brass quartet" making its SFJAZZ debut on October 23 with mentor-turned-collaborator Dave Douglas and drummer Anwar Marshall in the "Trumpet Fest" series, here's a selection of songs representing a variety of brass-oriented music The Westerlies have found inspiration in over the years, with each member contributing 3 selections.
