Mary Stallings and Dizzy Gillespie

Resident Artistic Director Mary Stallings tells the story of how she first met and performed with Dizzy Gillespie at the Black Hawk nightclub in San Francisco in the early 60s, and how it led to a musical partnership. Dizzy is one of several jazz greats Mary worked with who she pays tribute to on Thursday, May 4 to kick off her four-night SFJAZZ residency. She's also recreating the atmosphere of historic S.F. jazz clubs like Black Hawk and Jack’s Tavern (now Boom Boom Room Presents) as part of her residency on Saturday, May 6 in a program called "Jazzville" w/ organist Chester Thompson.
