Original show description below.

The winner of DownBeat Critics Poll for Rising Alto Saxophonist, visionary instrumentalist, composer, and activist Caroline Davis performs with her electro-acoustic band Alula, a forward-looking ensemble The New York Times calls “her most formally innovative group yet.”

Active as both a leader and side-person with a wide range of artists in jazz and modern classical music including Lee Konitz, Terry Riley, Matt Mitchell, Angelica Sanchez, and Miles Okazaki, Davis has released six albums since her 2012 debut Live Work & Play.

Her compositional work integrates music with the cognitive sciences and anatomical structures corresponding to her Ph.D in Music Cognition, and she has received grants from Chamber Music America and New York Foundation for the Arts.
Named for a specialized group of flight feathers on birds that are critical for takeoffs, landings, and maneuvering midair, Alula explores electronic and acoustic textures, making their recorded debut their self-titled 2019 album that included synthesizer work from Matt Mitchell (Linda May Han Oh, Dave Douglas, Tim Berne) and the drums and percussion of Greg Saunier (Deerhoof, Dal Niente, Mystical Weapons).

The current lineup features bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Eliza Salem, performing music from their upcoming album that includes a balance of improvised and composed material amongst electronic samples from freedom fighters held in captivity for wrongful convictions.
