Herman Gray

Herman Gray - 1st Term

Herman Gray is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz. He has published widely in the areas of black cultural theory, politics, and media with a with focus on Sociology, Cultural Studies, African American studies, and Jazz studies.

Gray is the author of Watching Race (Minnesota) and Cultural Moves and he co-edited Towards a Sociology of the Trace with Macarena Gomez Barris (Minnesota). Most recently, he co-edited The Sage Handbook of Television with Manuel Alvarado, Milly Buoanno and Toby Miller. Gray also is an author of jazz and media scholarship including John Coltrane and the Practice of Freedom and Race, Media & the Cultivation of Concern. Dr. Gray also served as a Peabody Award juror.
