The SFJAZZ Center is a beautiful and perfect stage for jazz artists and the community to celebrate the living American art form of jazz. The $64 million dollar Center launched in 2013 and the 33-year-old non-profit organization now crafts distinguished programming and education services from the heart of the San Francisco arts district. The budget for the 2017-18 season is more than $16.5 million with about half coming from ticket revenues.
Job Description
SFJAZZ is seeking a Human Resource Manager to create and maintain an employee-oriented team with everyone working towards the same goal and realizing the same vision: to be a recognized international leader in jazz creation, presentation, and education. The successful candidate will embody our organization’s core values of Discover, Inspire, and Celebrate.
The Human Resources Manager will report to the Director of Finance in assuming the responsibilities of recruitment, performance management, employee relations, legal compliance and being a key partner for the organization by supporting growth strategies through HR activities, programs, and initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interprets and implements HR polices, practices, and company philosophy to ensure effective administrative of the same in consideration of all current state and federal regulations.
- Leads recruitment effort for all exempt and non-exempt employees, interns, and temporary employees; handles on-boarding and off-boarding of all employees; and reviews salary justifications against compensation ranges, market data and internal comparators and works with senior management for necessary approvals.
- Oversees ongoing performance appraisal process including measurement criteria to ensure consistent application; communicates timelines and measures.
- Manages the performance management process including coaching management on how to best communicate expectations and performance feedback; develops performance plans to correct performance deficiencies; writes disciplinary documentation; partners with organization’s attorneys; and manages necessary terminations.
- Works with Directors and Managers to help define and clarify roles and responsibilities. Partners with management regarding department organization and staff responsibilities to ensure effective utilization of resources. Reviews job descriptions, compensation, and provides guidance and feedback regarding levels that are organizationally consistent to ensure equity.
- Manages the employee benefits program for the Organization and be the main liaison with our third party providers.
- Maintains accuracy of personnel records and data with the highest level of confidentially and discretion. Ensures employee records are kept up to date and creates reports and performs reconciliation projects as needed.
- Handles employee relations issues in a timely and effective fashion. Counsels employees and/or managers regarding a variety of issues. Serves as advocate to both employee and organization regarding policies, employee performance, work environment, and conflict issues.
- Responds to employee inquires, issues and problems relating to compensation, benefits, leaves of absence, etc. and ensures timely and appropriate action.
- Keep current regarding competitive HR practices, including compensation, benefits, and related issues.

Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher and 5 plus years of HR experience
- Experience in planning, developing, implementing & administrating Human Resource programs in employment, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and training
- Proven ability to consistently and positively contribute in a high-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork and organizational skills.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for jazz music
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on tact and diplomacy.
- A strong orientation to strategic thinking, communicating, influencing and building relationships at all levels within the company
- The ability to manage sensitive and complex employee relations cases and experience conducting investigations, making recommendations, and facilitating resolution
