The Klezmatics

The GRAMMY-winning Jewish klezmer superstars return to celebrate the Festival of Light, performing seasonal music from their acclaimed holiday album 'Happy Joyous Hanukkah' that set lyrics by the late Woody Guthrie to their delightful original compositions. Formed in the New York’s East Village in 1986, the Klezmatics led the resurgence of the nearly forgotten klezmer tradition and contemporized it with an irreverent dose of punk rock attitude, and since their inception, have been one of most visible faces of today’s Yiddish culture.

Bay Area vocalist and SFJAZZ Collective member Martin Luther McCoy honors the legacy of landmark gospel group The Soul Stirrers and legendary member Sam Cooke with this rousing tribute featuring guest singers Cornell Carter, Tony Lindsay, and special guest Avery*Sunshine. Paris Combo

Delightfully cosmopolitan and seductively swinging, Paris Combo is as diverse and sophisticated as the city from which the band hails. Combining Gypsy swing with elements of flamenco, chanson and alt-cabaret, the quintet mixes in Latin and North African rhythms for good measure. Holding all the diverse elements together is the sprightly vocalist Belle du Berry, who’s joined by Australian trumpeter/keyboardist David Lewis, classical bassist Benoît Dunoyer de Segonzac, French drummer François Jeannin, and Potzi, an Algerian Gypsy guitarist whose virtuosic style and natty appearance recalls Django Reinhardt.

This large ensemble piece featuring an expanded brass section celebrates seminal African-American composer and bandleader James Reese Europe. Making it’s West Coast premiere, Moran’s newest multi-media project is based around his longstanding Bandwagon trio and explores a previously untold chapter in jazz history. Jazz arrived in Europe not with the roaring ‘20s, but amidst the thunder of artillery in 1918, when American Expeditionary Forces helped bring an end to the Great War.
