Roger Glenn

The SFJAZZ Hotplate Festival begins auspiciously, with Bay Area jazz luminary Roger Glenn paying homage to collaborator and San Francisco Latin Jazz giant Cal Tjader. A veteran multi-instrumentalist versed in vibraphone and woodwinds of all varieties, Glenn has led a storied life, playing in a U.S. Army band with future stars Grover Washington Jr. and Billy Cobham before making his mark in the 70s on recordings and performances with Donald Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Mary Lou Williams, Bobbi Humphrey, and many others. One of Glenn’s most fruitful collaborations was with Tjader, who featured the flutist prominently on his GRAMMY-winning 1979 album La Onda Va Bien – the inaugural release on the Concord Picante label. On this night, Glenn and his band perform music from Tjader’s signature 1964 Verve album, Soul Sauce, a cross-over Latin jazz landmark that includes an electrified version of the Dizzy Gillespie/Chano Pozo title song, Mongo Santamaria’s classic “Afro Blue,” and Clare Fischer’s “João.”

"Soul Sauce is one of the highlights from Tjader's catalog with its appealing mixture of mambo, samba, bolero, and boogaloo styles... an album full of smart arrangements, subtly provocative vibe solos, and intricate percussion backing " — All Music Guide
