Washington D.C.-born guitarist and composer Joel Harrison doesn’t sit still. A fearless, exploratory musician who cut his teeth on the San Francisco improv scene, the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient decamped for New York in the early 2000s with a searching intellect that has long embraced styles and sonorities beyond standard jazz precepts. Working largely as a leader, he has recorded over a dozen sessions in settings from duo to big band, employing classical and global instrumentation and a gamut of stylistic approaches that includes Appalachian folk, blues, free improvisation, traditional African music, country, and rock. For this night, Harrison presents material from his latest Whirlwind Recordings release, Spirit House, featuring a masterful quintet including Pat Metheny Group trumpeter Cuong Vu, bassist Jeff Denson, electric bassoonist Paul Hanson, and drummer Brian Blade. Named for the diminutive structures used in East Asian cultures as a place for deities to reside, the album documents this project that, in Harrison’s words, “mixes heart, soul, intellect and wit to create music that might move in different ways… to open a door inside the listener that helps to experience something which takes them on a journey.”
