Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau

With his gift for melodic invention, astounding two-handed independence, and insatiable musical curiosity, Brad Mehldau is the most influential pianist of his generation. Now in his mid-40s, he’s created a vast and inordinately rich body of music, from multiple volumes documenting his superlative trio at the Village Vanguard to his wide-ranging duo encounters with Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman, Renée Fleming, and Anne Sofie von Otter. His latest duo project finds him deep in Americana territory with mandolin master, vocalist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Chris Thile, who’s spent the past quarter century expanding the sonic possibilities of his instrument with Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers. He’s also the new host of A Prairie Home Companion, a role that Garrison Keillor tapped him for last year. Thile and Mehldau first performed together in 2011, and they’ve honed a due repertoire that seamlessly blends jazz, bluegrass, folk, and pop. Their eponymous 2017 double album on Nonesuch features a magpie program of originals and covers, including Elliott Smith's “Independence Day,” Bob Dylan's “Don't Think Twice, It's Alright,” Joni Mitchell's “Marcie,” and “Tabhair dom do Lámh” (Give Me Your Hand), the haunting traditional Irish ballad by 17th century harpist Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin.
