Joey Alexander Trio

12-year-old Joey Alexander is the brightest young light in jazz piano – a figure whose emotional range and musical maturity confounds the stereotypical definition of a jazz prodigy. As opposed being a product of a rigorous training program, Alexander is an autodidact, picking up the keyboard at age six, being inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk, and progressing through intuition and deep musical feeling. Since his U.S. debut two years ago at the Jazz at Lincoln Center gala, at which director Wynton Marsalis described Alexander as “my hero”, the Bali-born pianist has rocketed to stardom via a performance on the 2016 GRAMMY awards, a feature segment on 60 Minutes, an appearance on the Today show, and a TED conference, as well as headlining performances at the Newport Jazz Festival, the Jazz Standard, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center. His 2015 debut release on the Motema label, My Favorite Things, is a dazzling statement of intent, showcasing his uncanny virtuosity and subtle interplay with refreshing interpretations of the work of John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Billy Strayhorn. The album was nominated for a GRAMMY award in the categories of Best Instrumental Jazz Album, while Alexander received a personal nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo on his version of Coltrane’s “Giant Steps.” These accolades make Joey Alexander the youngest artist ever nominated for a GRAMMY in the jazz category.
