“One of the top harmonica players in the U.S.,” (All Music Guide) the East Bay music luminary, GRAMMY nominee and Blues Music Award winner joins former members of James Cotton’s band with these nights celebrating the legacy of the legendary blues singer, songwriter, and harmonica master who passed away in 2017 at the age of 81.

Getting his start with blues titan Howlin’ Wolf, Cotton was widely considered the last great harmonica master of his generation, a singular and immediately identifiable artist who replaced Little Walter in guitar icon Muddy Waters’ band in 1955 and led his own acclaimed ensemble for nearly sixty years.

Known to SFJAZZ audiences for hosting the Blues Harmonica Blowout at the SFJAZZ Center for several years, Hummel has defined the West Coast blues sound for over five decades, leading his band the Blues Survivors and performing alongside Charles Brown, Charlie Musselwhite, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Brownie McGhee, and of course, James Cotton.

A veteran bandleader with over 30 albums to his credit and innumerable performances around the world, Hummel reunites Cotton’s telepathic blues band featuring guitarists Tom Holland and Steve Freund, bassist Cros Charles Mack, and drummer June Core for an evening of blues harp celebration.
