Original show description below.

“The quartet's goal is purposeful: to unleash music's magic to help counteract pervasive prejudices around immigration and race” (Montana Public Radio).

On a mission to reclaim the immigrant soul of American folk and roots music, Hindustani vocalist Falu Shah, Ranky Tanky guitarist and co-founder Clay Ross, acclaimed Issei bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and master jazz drummer Clarence Penn showcase the dynamic diversity of contemporary culture by reimagining timeless songs from America's past that highlight the country’s immigrant roots.

Known to SFJAZZ audiences through his performances with Ranky Tanky and vocalist Lisa Fischer, guitarist Clay Ross is a multiple GRAMMY winner who has worked with Gregory Porter, Snarky Puppy, and Bobby McFerrin.

Mumbai-born vocalist Falu Shah won the 2022 GRAMMY for Best Children’s Album with her release A Colorful World, and has collaborated with A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, Ustad Sultan Khan, and Philip Glass.
Among the most in-demand bassists in jazz, Yasushi Nakamura was recently seen at SFJAZZ with Cécile McLorin Salvant and has built a stellar reputation as a leader and sideman with Wycliffe Gordon, Vincent Herring, Myron Walden, and the Baylor Project.

One of the most respected and influential drummers on the scene, Clarence Penn is an established bandleader and a veteran of work with Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Dave Douglas, Michael Brecker, Maria Schneider, and dozens of others.
