Original show description below.
Berkeley clarinetist Ben Goldberg has spent the past four decades expanding jazz’s frontiers as an improviser, composer and pioneer of the radical Jewish music movement. A relentlessly creative composer, he’s written chamber orchestra song cycles, gutbucket blues, and minimalist soundscapes.
Dividing his time between the Bay Area and New York City in recent years, Goldberg has forged deep ties to a vast and varied constellation of improvisers, including guitarist Mary Halvorson, pianist Myra Melford, and drummers Allison Miller, Gerald Cleaver, Kenny Wollesen, and Ches Smith.
No stranger to SFJAZZ audiences, he’s performed at the Center in ensembles accompanying Chris Potter, Nels Cline and Steven Bernstein. But the shows with Ben Goldberg's Glamorous Escapades mark his first outing in the building as a leader. The quartet explores Porch Concert Material, a set of sly, relatively brief melodic statements that Goldberg wrote during the first year of the pandemic, sketches he’s explored with a variety of ensembles. Featuring the imposing guitar tandem of Steve Cardenas and Will Bernard and tUnE-yArDs drummer Hamir Atwel, Glorious Escapades is one Porch Concert that’s liable to turn into a searing barbeque.
The Berkeley-based clarinet genius brings music from his suite Porch Concert Material with a quartet including Steve Cardenas, Will Bernard, and Hamir Atwal.
Goldberg is one of those Midas musicians who brings all of instrumental music’s best traits to roost under one umbrella.
