Throughout his career Dave Holland has established a history for making his bands a proving ground for promising young instrumentalists, but this trio is a true all-star assemblage of jazz heavyweights, each an established bandleader and composer who represents the world standard. The group performs the funk-informed material from Holland’s latest Edition Records album, 2019’s Another Land, which features the searing, soulful guitar work of Kevin Eubanks along with the percussive fire of former SFJAZZ Collective drummer Obed Calvaire. Rhythmic genius Eric Harland, a regular Holland collaborator since 2008’s Pass It On, stands in for Calvaire on this date, and Beninese guitar phenomenon Lionel Loueke plays in place of Eubanks.

Far more than one of the jazz’s greatest bassists, Dave Holland has inhabited the music’s adventurous edge ever since Miles Davis hired him to anchor his band in 1968 as it rapidly morphed from an acoustic powerhouse to a pioneering fusion combo. After spending years exploring the outer reaches with Anthony Braxton and Sam Rivers and founding the pioneering Gateway Trio with John Abercrombie and Jack DeJohnette, the British-born bassist started leading his own ensembles which have served as a proving ground for a legion of celebrated improvisers. 24 albums as a leader and collaborations with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and dozens more have made him among the most versatile and prolific bassist/composers in jazz history.
This all-star trio of jazz heavyweights performs material from Holland’s latest album, 2019’s Another Land, featuring guitarist Lionel Loueke and drummer Eric Harland.
