For Joshua Redman, the search for new sounds often flows from his most enduring musical relationships. In assembling the quintet for his 2023 album Where Are We the Berkeley saxophone star turned to an all-star cast of players with whom he’s shaped the contemporary jazz scene for some three decades.
Since making a name for himself in Redman’s 1994 MoodSwing quartet, Brian Blade has become one of the era’s definitive drummers. They’ve maintained a close working relationship over the years though their collaborations accelerated with the Ornette Coleman/Dewey Redman-inspired quartet Still Dreaming and the reassembled MoodSwing quartet with Brad Mehldau and Christian McBride.
Pianist/keyboardist Aaron Parks toured and recorded with Redman as a member of the collective quartet James Farm (with then-SFJAZZ Collective members Matt Penman and Eric Harland). And while bassist Joe Sanders hadn’t recorded with Redman before Where Are We they’ve performed together widely over the past decade in various trio and quartet settings. The newcomer is New Orleans-based vocalist and songwriter Gabrielle Cavassa, co-winner of the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition. Raised in the San Diego area, she fell in love with jazz while attending San Francisco State and started sitting in at Club Deluxe. She blossomed in New Orleans as a performer, bandleader and composer, earning critical raves for her eponymous 2020 Jamison Ross-produced debut album. In joining forces with Redman and friends, she’s making another major leap.
Saxophonist Joshua Redman premieres his new quartet with Aaron Parks, Joe Sanders, and Brian Blade, performing music from his new album Where Are We with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
