Joe Henderson Lab
The prodigiously talented young Santa Cruz-based pianist and producer brings a delirious, kinetic artistry to his JHL debut, performing the groove-heavy, jazz-informed compositions he’s made his signature.
Born to an Indian mother and Mauritian father and raised in Sunnyvale, the largely self-taught keyboardist named himself for the Greek mythological character Telemachus and was inspired by jazz from an early age, counting Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Robert Glasper as primary influences.
A serious injury kept him bedridden for six months in his teens — a formative period during which he discovered J DIlla and the jazz-meets-hip hop style of A Tribe Called Quest. He began making beats on his iPad as a creative outlet, and a talented producer was born.
Telemakus released his full-length debut Calantha in 2018, named for an off-world colony in the Philip K. Dick sci-fi classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, establishing a masterful, fully formed artist with a taste for cosmic musical exploration. After two further albums and performances in New York and points beyond, Telemakus sets down his mothership in the intimate setting of the Joe Henderson Lab with his working group, performing music from his forthcoming new release.
