Original show description below.
East Bay-based groovemasters The Seshen bring their signature Afrofuturist funktronica to the Joe Henderson Lab, led by the electrifying vocals of Lalin St. Juste, who made a memorable SFJAZZ debut as a solo artist in April 2023, and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. They bring music from their latest album, 2023’s Nowhere.
Meeting while both were studying abroad in Ghana as college students, St. Juste and Ehara bonded over a similar omnivorous taste in music and formed the band out of jam sessions and online classified ads to become one of the most buzzed-about groups on the Bay Area’s music scene. With over a decade of musical alchemy now behind them, The Seshen is widely known as a powerhouse live band possessed of a singular telepathy and wide-ranging influences, from synth-pop to classic R&B.
The group has come a very long way since the release of their self-titled 2012 debut album, touring relentlessly and releasing two dozen singles and EPs in addition to their four full-length recordings.
Following up 2020’s masterful CYAN, Nowhere is a delirious meditation on the dissolution of a personal relationship and finding the power to move forward with life’s constant ebbs and flows, stronger than you were before.
