Much like the American Songbook contains dozens of sublime ballads that have been interpreted by countless jazz and pop artists, the Latin American Songbook brims with love-besotted boleros. The Los Angeles ensemble Tres Souls is dedicated to interpreting this exquisite body of songs with three-part harmony arrangements redolent of the golden age of Mexican Cinema (1930s-1960s), when Cuban, Mexican and Puerto Rican composers wrote many of the era’s biggest hits. The trio performs a sublime program of holiday music for their SFJAZZ debut.

Led by lead vocalist Rocio Mendoza, Roberto Carlos on guitar and vocals, and Jesus Martinez on requinto and vocals, Tres Souls extends the legacy of stars like Eydie Gorme y Los Panchos, Los Tres Reyes, and Los Tres Ases. The increasingly visible ensemble has won new fans across the Southland performing at high-profile events like the premiere of Disney’s hit animated film Coco, the Music Center’s 59th Annual Holiday Celebration, and most recently a sold-out show at the Ford Theater’s 5th Annual Boleros de Noche concert.

While quite a few standards have passed back and forth between the English and Spanish language repertoire there’s nothing in the jazz tradition quite like the trio romanticos tradition, and there’s no group keeping that passionate flame burning with the style of Tres Souls.

The Los Angeles ensemble is dedicated to interpreting the classic Mexican bolero and the trio romanticos tradition. They perform a sublime program of holiday-themed music.
