Night two of Anat Cohen’s Resident Artistic Director week features the woodwind virtuoso accompanied by guitarists Gilad Hekselman, Romero Lubambo, and Sheryl Bailey.

Like Cohen, Hekselman hails from the creative cauldron that is the Israeli jazz scene and has been a regular collaborator with the clarinetist over the years. He is a remarkable guitarist who has recorded and performed with a host of established jazz veterans including Chris Potter, John Scofield, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato, Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks, and Jeff “Tain” Watts. He won the 2005 Gibson Montreaux International Guitar Competition and has released 10 masterful recordings including his 2022 Edition Records release Far Star.

Called “one of the new greats of her chosen instrument” by DownBeat, Sheryl Bailey was a finalist in the 1995 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition and has recorded nine albums as a leader, many in the classic organ trio format. She’s worked with Richard Bona, Harvie S., Ingrid Jensen, Mike LaDonne, and David Krakauer, and is a member of Anat Cohen’s Tentet.

A towering figure in Brazilian music, Rio-born Romero Lubambo gained recognition through his work with Astrud Gilberto and Herbie Mann, and formed the iconic Trio da Paz with drummer Duduka da Fonseca and bassist Nilson Matta in 1986. He’s released 20 albums as a leader and collaborated with a staggering list of jazz greats including Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Hermeto Pascoal, Kenny Barron, and Dianne Reeves, with whom he continues to tour and record.

Raised in Israel, the GRAMMY-nominated multi-reedist has been a force on the New York jazz scene for nearly two decades. Her talents keep growing, as she absorbs swing, samba, Middle Eastern and classical influences into her organic and inviting concept. Her clarinet evokes “infectious joy,” says the New York Times, calling her “an improviser with gusto.”

ABOUT ANAT COHEN

During her 2023 residency, Cohen will explore a variety of group settings: duo, trio, and a guitar ensemble.

What’s not to love about a young clarinetist and saxophonist who plays everything we love — modern jazz, world music, “hot” New Orleans style jazz — and does it all brilliantly?
