“One of jazz’s more ambitious soloists and composers” (The New York Times), the remarkable young Julliard-educated trumpeter meshes a profound knowledge of the jazz tradition with the bone-deep Creole influence of his Trinidad upbringing. This exclusive performance will be the Bay Area debut of his multi-part suite dedicated to the sounds and traditions of his homeland’s Carnival celebration. In his words, “In 2010, I went home for my first carnival since 2001. That feeling of reconnecting with home during our most vibrant ritual is one I'll never forget. As a musician, the sounds spoke to me. In between 2015 and 2016, I spent 11 weeks in Trinidad & Tobago on my Guggenheim Fellowship researching as many elements of Carnival as I could find.”

A visionary bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Charles developed a strikingly original body of work combining traditional rhythms and themes from Trinidad and Haiti with a post-bop harmonic lexicon. A professor of jazz studies at Michigan State University and 2015 Guggenheim Fellow, he has staked his own claim as an innovator with a series of critically acclaimed albums, from his 2006 debut Culture Shock to 2015’s Creole Christmas featuring Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition winner Ben Williams, former SFJAZZ High School All-Star Elena Pinderhughes, and SFJAZZ Collective drummer Obed Calvaire.
