Original show description below.

“One of the transforming figures of early 21st-century jazz” (The Guardian), saxophonist and composer Steve Lehman returns with his trio featuring the incomparable rhythm section of bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid, playing music from Lehman’s career as well as material from his upcoming album with tenor great and former SFJAZZ Collective member Mark Turner.

Lehman is a visionary artist whose singular approaches to composition and performance earned him a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2014 Doris Duke Artist Award. Mentored by alto saxophone giant Jackie McLean, he is a regular collaborator with pianist Vijay Iyer, and has worked extensively with Anthony Braxton, Jason Moran, George Lewis, Tyshawn Sorey, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Meshell Ndegeocello in addition to his career as a bandleader. Lehman’s innovative work as a composer integrates the influences of free jazz, bebop, hip-hop, and the spectral harmony concepts pioneered by composers Tristan Murail and Gérard Grisey, and his lauded Octet received a “Jazz Album of the Year” nod from The New York Times for its 2009 Pi Recordings album Travail, Transformation and Flow. The follow-up, Mise en Abîme, took “Best New Album” honors in the 2014 NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll.

Lehman’s clockwork trio debuted on his 2012 release Dialect Fluorescent and reteamed for 2019’s The People I Love.
