Drummer Robert “Sput” Searight and percussionist Nate Werth have powered Snarky Puppy throughout its rise from regional Texas act to GRAMMY Award-winning international empire. As the rhythmic heart of the ensemble there was every reason for sky-high expectations when they launched the spin-off band Ghost-Note. Looking to create a sleek vehicle for their new model of “conscious funk” they recruited some of the world’s most accomplished groovers hailing from the bands of Prince, Snoop Dogg, Qantic, and Herbie Hancock, and the rest is history.

Since the release of the band’s 2015 debut album Fortified (Ropeadope), which hit No. 1 on the iTunes jazz chart, Ghost-Note has honed a muscular percussion-driven sound distilling funk, jazz and hip hop grooves with a brilliant cast of cutting-edge R&B improvisers. Featuring saxophone star Kamasi Washington, Snarky Puppy keyboardist Shaun Martin, Antibalas guitarist Raja Kassis, and spoken word artist Prudence the Auset, Ghost-Note’s follow up release, 2018’s Swagism (Ropeadope), also topped iTunes jazz chart. What’s extraordinary about the combo is the way it expands on seductive beats from the deep pocket of the late, legendary J Dilla, morphing seamlessly from funk/fusion disco and D'Angelo funk to Earth, Wind & Fire anthems. It’s 21st century soul conjured by a singularly potent rhythm section tandem.
