Original show description below.
Starting his career as a preternaturally talented youth, which included being the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Jules at Eight, a GRAMMY Awards performance at 13, and faculty status at the Stanford Jazz Workshop at 15, Santa Rosa-born guitarist Julian Lage’s trajectory has been linear, embracing jazz, pop, country, bluegrass, and acoustic folk. Star-making work with Gary Burton, Bèla Fleck, and Chris Thile, as well as duet projects with guitarists Chris Eldridge and Nels Cline (Wilco) have led to Lage’s current trio. Following up Lage’s 2016 debut release Arclight, which embraced originals and pre-bebop jazz, the group performs music from their new Mack Avenue recording, Modern Lore.
“Fun, smart, and technically impressive” (PopMatters), New York-based collective Thumbscrew is a power-trio composer’s project made up of in-demand bandleaders, featuring maverick guitarist Mary Halvorson, who All About Jazz described as “the most impressive guitarist of her generation.” Bassist Michael Formanek is a veteran of work with Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, and Stan Getz, while Tomas Fujiwara leads numerous ensembles and boasts a résumé including work with Red Baraat, Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, and others. The band has released a pair of exploratory releases on Cuneiform including their latest, 2016’s Convallaria.
One of jazz’s breezier virtuosos, possessed of an unflappable technical facility and a seemingly boundless curiosity.
