Original show description below.
The prodigiously talented saxophonist, vocalist and composer alternately known as Hailey Niswanger has distinguished herself as a bandleader and sidewoman hired by some of jazz’s finest players. In 2016, the Los Angeles-based improviser had an inspiration to expand beyond her jazz roots into a new project that reflected her personal and spiritual growth, giving herself the alternate persona MAE.SUN and creating a simmering new crucible for melding post-bop and fusion, funk, electronica, and neo-soul.
The result is a quicksilver sound introduced on her seductive debut release Vol. 1: Inter-be (Calmit Productions), an immersive, stylistically kaleidoscopic project featuring a cast of rising players. She returns to SFJAZZ with music from her sophomore release Vol. 2: Into The Flow accompanied by a telepathic band.
In many ways this new vision reflects the saxophonist’s far-flung experiences. She’s delved into Ethio-jazz as a member Either/Orchestra and was tapped by pianist Danilo Perez for the inaugural class of Berklee’s elite Global Jazz Institute in 2010. She has partnered with Esperanza Spalding, Teri Lyne Carrington, Harvey Mason, the Wolff & Clark Expedition, Sleigh Bells, and the Soul Rebels Brass Band. As MAE.SUN, Niswanger continues to blaze an alluring contemporary sound.

Niswanger’s rapid ascent up the jazz ranks has been one of the most exciting stories in jazz.
