“One of the top harmonica players in the U.S.,” (All Music Guide) the East Bay music luminary, GRAMMY nominee and Blues Music Award winner leads his all-star Blues Survivors with a night of burning electric blues focused on material from his recent albums including his latest Electro-Fi release, 2020’s Wayback Machine.
A Bay Area resident for nearly five decades, Hummel has defined the West Coast blues sound, leading the Blues Survivors and performing alongside Charles Brown, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith.
For this three-night engagement, Hummel brings a version of the Blues Survivors that combines a pair of Texas-reared masters from his Golden State-Lone Star Revue project, guitarist Anson Funderbergh and drummer Wes Starr, with a pair of longtime California blues compatriots in guitarist Rusty Zinn and bassist R.W. Grigsby. Collectively, the band has worked with a pantheon of major names including Delbert McClinton, Kim Wilson, Jimmie Vaughn, Marcia Ball, Asleep At The Wheel, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Huey Lewis, John Mayall, Carlene Carter, Boz Scaggs and many others.
SFJAZZ has hosted Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blowout shows for many years, and this is a welcome return for a true Bay Area blues giant.
For this three-night engagement, Hummel brings a version of the Blues Survivors that combines a pair of Texas-reared masters from his Golden State-Lone Star Revue project with a pair of longtime California blues compatriots.
