Far more than a guitar legend, 20-time GRAMMY-winner Pat Metheny is a brilliant builder of bands, and with these performances, he presents the Bay Area debut of his new trio project Side-Eye, featuring keyboardist James Francies and drummer Joe Dyson.
As a teenage prodigy coming up on the Kansas City and Boston scenes, Metheny made tremendous creative strides by keeping company with older musicians, learning the particular demands of playing their music. He created the payback project Side-Eye as a vehicle to offer younger players a similar kind of experience, reinterpreting some of his classic compositions while also exploring recently composed tunes inspired by his Side-Eye collaborators.
Designed as an ongoing showcase featuring a rotating cast of players, the project’s first incarnation has all the makings of an unforgettable encounter. Side-Eye kicks off as a trio with the brilliant Houston-raised pianist/keyboardist James Francies, who made indelible impressions with his 2018 SFJAZZ debut with José James’ Bill Withers project and as part Chris Potter’s Circuits Trio during the 2019 San Francisco Jazz Festival. He has just released his second Blue Note session. On drums is the sensational Joe Dyson, heir to the proud legacy of New Orleans drummers and a collaborator with Donald Harrison, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Sullivan Fortner, Nicholas Payton, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah.
Designed as an ongoing showcase featuring a rotating cast of players, the project’s first incarnation has all the makings of an unforgettable encounter.
