Original show description below.

The first night of the Collective’s 2017-18 residency begins as the band’s inaugural 2004 season did – with the music of the late, iconoclastic saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman. A pioneer of the avant-garde, Coleman remains one of the most innovative and controversial figures in jazz history. The Collective's innovative arrangements include Coleman gems “Lonely Woman,” Happy House,” “Una Muy Bonita,” and others, and Billboard described the live recoding of this material as “one of the two most significant jazz moments of 2004.” With only Miguel Zénon remaining in the group from that auspicious opening season, this is a rare chance to hear these exclusive arrangements of Coleman’s music performed by the current incarnation of the Collective.

About the SFJAZZ Collective
