Community Engagement

SFJAZZ celebrates the full spectrum of jazz, from the music’s origins in the Caribbean Basin and African American communities to its diverse present-day expressions around the world. SFJAZZ’s Community Engagement initiative is designed to implement its equity, access, and inclusion mandates at the board, staff, audience, artist, and student levels.

As presenters of an art form that is rooted in the Black American experience, SFJAZZ has a unique responsibility to welcome, engage, and collaborate with communities of color across the Bay Area. That is especially true for Black and brown communities and music institutions that gave birth to and continue to foster the art we present.

The work of the SFJAZZ Community Engagement Department leverages and builds upon the community engagement work that has already been happening in the organization, especially within the Education Department. We are expanding the SFJAZZ community by sharing resources to create strong relationships and a diverse pipeline for staff, leadership, audiences, and for our range of programs and projects. This means working with students, parents, community leaders, partner organizations, and artists to create opportunities for all. To achieve this, SFJAZZ is finding ways to strengthen and deepen relationships in our neighborhoods, diversify those who come to SFJAZZ and make them feel welcome, and develop SFJAZZ into a network hub for jazz music and history.

Community Impact

We aim to deepen and widen our community impact by increasing and strengthening SFJAZZ’s engagement with diverse and under-resourced communities outside of the Center. Some of our partners include Living Jazz, the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Ruth Williams Opera House, and the San Francisco Public Library. SFJAZZ is also a proud member of the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association and the Hayes Valley Merchants Council.

Community Development

We work to create greater diversity among our audiences and employees and ensure they feel welcome, comfortable, and part of the SFJAZZ community. Some of the ways we’re doing that include our Community Open House, monthly SFJAM sessions, and our Community Memberships.
