Tag along as Monsieur Periné explores San Francisco during their four-night residency at the SFJAZZ Center. The band’s two leaders Catalina García and Santiago Prieto walk us through their favorite Colombian cuisine at Pacifico at B-Side, take their first-ever robo taxi, go crate digging at Discodelic in the Mission, stack up their favorite artists, and bring us onstage with them during an SFJAZZ performance.
Part 1 - Colombian Cuisine w/ Pacifico
“Colombians are dessert people...” Catalina García and Santiago Prieto (Monsieur Periné) give us a full tour of Colombian cuisine at Pacifico, a family-run Latin American restaurant blending the bold, coastal flavors of Colombia, Peru, and California. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Chef Daniel Morales Vallejo and Laura Gelvez, Pacifico began as a series of beloved pop-ups across San Francisco and now proudly anchors the residency at B-side Bar at SFJAZZ’s in Hayes Valley.
Part 2 - RoboTaxi Ride
“I don’t know if this car would survive Bogotá…” Catalina García and Santiago Prieto (Monsieur Periné) take their first ever robo taxi ride to the Mission, sharing some stories about the band on the way, and how Catalina got the nickname “DJ Arepa.”
Part 3 - Crate Digging at Discodelic
“We love to dance…” Catalina García and Santiago Prieto (Monsieur Periné) go crate digging at Discodelic in San Francisco’s Mission District, and is the Bay Area's only Latino-owned record store. Catalina gives insights into Colombian culture and picks out some of her favorite cumbia records. Santiago shares the music he grew up listening to in his home.
Part 4 - Favorite Artists x Versus
“If I’m being honest with my childhood self…” Catalina García and Santiago Prieto (Monsieur Periné) pick their favorite artists in 1v1 match ups and provide insights about each artists – from Shakira and Bomba Estereo, to Django Reinhardt, Fela Kuti and Caetano Veloso.
Part 5 - Live Concert at SFJAZZ
The “Cata cam”! To round out the day, Catalina García and Santiago Prieto (Monsieur Periné) bring us onstage with them during their performance back at the SFJAZZ Center.
ABOUT MONSIEUR PERINÉ
“One of the most exciting emerging artists in Latin music” (LA Weekly), the 2015 Latin GRAMMY winner for Best New Artist has created a singular sound that merges the simmering French jazz manouche style of Django Reinhardt with dance-inspiring Latin American rhythms and myriad modern influences.
Formed over a decade ago in Bogotá, Colombia by singer Catalina García and guitarist Santiago Prieto, the band has cultivated a fervent following by blending the spirit of 1930s music with the joyous and sophisticated sounds of contemporary Latin American pop — a worldly, boundary-blurring approach places them in the same echelon as contemporaries Natalia Lafourcade, Troker, Carla Morrison, and Bomba Estereo.
We've been developing a new video series called "Day In The Life" with artists like Lettuce who are performing multiple nights at SFJAZZ, so they actually have a couple days to hang out and explore the city. The idea is that we document their experience at the venue and do an outing with them in SF.
