SFJAZZ presents “the brightest young star in the firmament” (London Jazz News), Carminho. She is heiress to the fado legacy as the daughter of world renowned fadista Teresa Siqueira. An innovator whose work incorporates influences from Brazil and points beyond, she performs music from her new Warner Music album, the self-produced Portuguesa — a release that expands upon her skills as a composer while it shines a new light on timeless fado classics.
ABOUT CARMINHO
Fado’s ongoing renaissance shows no signs of slowing down, and the emergence of Carminho on the world stage is a sure sign that the haunting Portuguese style continues to thrive. With her luxuriantly rich voice and emotionally riveting stage presence, Carminho returns for her first Bay Area appearance in four years.
The daughter of esteemed fadista Teresa Siqueira, the artist born Maria do Carmo Carvalho Rebelo de Andrade is steeped in the soul-bearing tradition, but she’s honing a palette that embraces influences from the far-flung Lusophone world, particularly Brazil, Angola and Cape Verde. After gaining attention outside of Portugal with her chart-topping 2011 duet on "Perdóname" with rising Andalusian pop star Pablo Alborán, she’s released six albums — four of which hit number one at home, including 2014’s Canto and 2016’s gorgeous bossa nova project Carminho Canta Tom Jobim.
Her last album, 2018’s platinum-selling Maria, is a gorgeous fado session that showcased her growing skills as a songwriter, and her new Warner Music album, the self-produced Portuguesa, expands upon her skills as a composer while it shines a new light on timeless fado classics.
