School Day Concerts

Watch Overview

Email us at schoolprograms@sfjazz.org

These free performances are tailored to students in grades K-12 with leading jazz artists and educators at the SFJAZZ Center's beautiful Miner Auditorium, as well as direct to public and charter middle schools across San Francisco and Oakland. Students experience jazz in all its forms, explore how the African Diaspora shaped our musical landscape, participate in a highly interactive environment, and learn how jazz is alive, relevant and continuing to grow today!

It's such a pleasure to see the ideas and inspiration generated from their visit to SFJAZZ!

AT SFJAZZ CENTER

2018–19 Concerts

OCT 10 (K-5) / OCT 11 (6-12) | 10:30-11:30AM
Glen Pearson Celebrates the Music of Thelonious Monk

Jazz pianist and educator Glen Pearson spearheads a special program on the music and life of Thelonious Monk, and how he pioneered new directions in jazz performance. Pearson’s all-star ensemble will discuss and highlight how Monk’s piano improvisation and compositions inspired a direction in jazz that’s still being studied and pursued by current generations. Through this interactive performance, Pearson and the ensemble will demonstrate Monk's unique approach, and how it has gone from being originally ridiculed, to becoming the basis of an entire institute.
