“A national treasure steeped in both the past and the present” (The New York Times), The Dirty Dozen Brass Band celebrates 50 years as the New Orleans institution responsible for the resurgence of the brass band tradition to ring in the new year.
Originally assembled in 1977 and currently led by founding members Gregory Davis, Kirk Joseph & Roger Lewis, the Dirty Dozen started when public enthusiasm for the New Orleans brass sound was at its lowest point. The lack of expectation (and gigs) freed the ensemble from strict adherence to traditional songs and approaches, and they borrowed freely from the pop music of the day as well as countless other influences.
Tours of the U.S. and Europe made them international stars by the mid 80s and an inspiration to aspiring bands throughout New Orleans and the rest of the world.
