ABOUT THIS SHOW
Night two of Immanuel Wilkins’s week as Resident Artistic Director takes him to the intimate environment of the Joe Henderson Lab along with his sublime working quartet and guest saxophone great David Murray.
A marvel of telepathic communication and masterful musicianship, Wilkins’s quartet featuring pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Ryoma Takenaga, and Oakland-born drummer Savannah Harris is a major force in jazz today, with Thomas a mainstay of the saxophonist’s live performance and recording ensembles since his 2020 Blue Note debut Omega.
An Oakland native, David Murray is one of the most acclaimed and accomplished saxophonists in jazz. A founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet, he’s led an epochal five-decade career as a GRAMMY-winning bandleader with nearly 100 albums under his name and is known widely for his work with James Blood Ulmer, McCoy Tyner, the Roots, and Jack DeJohnette. He’s a Guggenheim fellow, was named the Village Voice’s Artist of the Decade and Musician of the Year by Newsday. His 2024 album Francesca was selected #2 Best Jazz Album of the Year by The New York Times.
