Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer offer a captivating exploration of sound at the intersection of electronic innovation and classical tradition. Chiu, a Los Angeles-based synthesist and composer, and Honer, an accomplished violist and session musician, have developed a distinctive musical partnership that seamlessly blends modular synthesizer with viola. Their performances are characterized by a masterful interplay of acoustic and electronic textures, creating immersive sonic landscapes that are both organic and experimental.

The duo’s collaboration is rooted in years of shared experience and artistic growth, beginning with their initial meeting in Chicago’s vibrant improvisational music scene and continuing through their relocation to Los Angeles. Their joint album for the International Anthem label, Recordings from the Åland Islands, exemplifies their approach, combining field recordings with improvisational passages to evoke a sense of place and atmosphere.

Their new album, Different Rooms, is a stunning evolution in their approach, featuring guests including guitar luminary Jeff Parker and saxophonist Josh Johnson.

In concert, Chiu’s analog and digital synths interact fluidly with Honer’s expressive viola, resulting in music that feels both spontaneous and meticulously crafted, taking audiences on an auditory journey. Their performances not only showcase technical prowess but also highlight the emotional resonance possible when two distinct musical voices unite in creative dialogue.

Lo-Fi Oyster Co. & SFJAZZ Co-Present

For this special co-presentation SFJAZZ partners with Bay Area-based experimental music and oyster service platform Lo-Fi Oyster Co. for their 'Aural Estuary' concert series.  'Aural estuary' refers to the soundscape of an estuary, a place where saltwater from the ocean mixes with freshwater from rivers and streams. These unique environments, often called "nurseries of the sea", are known for their high productivity and rich biodiversity, supporting a wide range of plants and animals. The sounds within these environments can be diverse and contribute to a fuller understanding of the ecosystem.

Lo-Fi Oyster Co. and Colombian soul-food restaurant Pacifico will be collaborating on a special seafood focused menu inside the SFJAZZ Center prior to the show. Join us at Pacifico for dinner and a post-reception concluding this curatorial collaboration.

Founded in 2023, Lo-Fi Oyster Co. lives at the intersection of experimental, ambient, straight-ahead jazz, and oyster service focusing on bridging the gap between music, visual art, wine making, & culinary communities as well as providing a gateway for these networks to reach and embrace new audiences, friends, and patrons.

This partnership is powered by The Svane Family Foundation dedicated to the revitalization of downtown San Francisco.
