Unbound by genre conventions, Natalie Tenenbaum designs epic soundscapes combining classical compositional forms, popular storytelling, and jazz improvisation. Making her SFJAZZ debut, the composer, pianist and singer-songwriter is in the midst of a thriving multi-directional career in the creative cauldron of New York City, writing, arranging, orchestrating, producing and music directing for an improbably expansive array of artists, events and productions from Carnegie Hall and SXSW to Broadway and Hollywood.
A Juilliard graduate, Tenenbaum has performed with orchestras in Israel, Europe, Asia and the U.S., premiering her own compositions and creating real-time composition/improvisations in concert. In recent years she worked with David Byrne on American Utopia and created arrangements and orchestrations for Lang Lang's 2022 album The Disney Book with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Other collaborations include duos with Eitan Kenner and Julian “J3PO” Pollack and music direction for Titus Burgess, Lea Michele, and the 8-Bit Big Band.
Her recent post-classical album Standard Repertoire Vol. 1 features her original music, sound design, and reimaginings of works by Bach, Stravinsky, Debussy, Liszt and others. Whatever she plays, Tenenbaum is an artist forging thrilling new directions by deploying her command of technology, jazz, pop and the classical canon.
