Three-time GRAMMY Winner Cécile McLorin Salvant is the “the most successful female jazz singer to emerge since the turn of the millennium” (JazzTimes). For this highly anticipated engagement, she brings music from her newest Nonesuch Records release Oh Snap, with her remarkable band featuring pianist Sullivan Fortner.
Possessing a deep, velvety voice, rhythmic poise, and a sublime feel for the blues, Salvant combines conservatory-honed technique with a beguiling gift for lyrical interpretation — a singular, inimitable talent that won her the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocals Competition and drew the attention of early collaborators Jacky Terrasson and Wynton Marsalis.
Since her 2013 American debut album, the GRAMMY-nominated WomanChild, Salvant’s profile has taken a meteoric course around the world.
Never one to rest on past triumphs, Salvant is always exploring new realms of expression, from reinterpreted 1980s pop classics to symphonic music and her original song cycle Ogresse, making each SFJAZZ residency into a journey of unexpected delights. The music from Oh Snap presents yet another new side to Salvant’s creativity, consisting of original songs recorded alone in her home and expanded with contributions from her regular collaborators Fortner, bassist Yasushi Nakaumura, and drummer Kyle Poole. Utilizing electronic instruments, loops, vocal effects, and layers of overdubs, Oh Snap takes Salvant’s singular gifts into exciting new territory.
