SFJAZZ is excited to present our new three-week Producers’ Series exploring the powerful expressive tools of Ableton Live, one of the most popular music production software programs in the world. Producer, performer and DJ Jef Stott highlights multiple aspects of Ableton Live, from quickly creating new work, recording, arranging and mixing, to DJing and performing live onstage. Each 3-hour class is packed with valuable information and includes lab time for experimenting with class materials. A select number of computers will be available for students in class. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting to take a deeper dive into Ableton Live! Classes may be taken individually or as a complete series.

Class-by-class Details
Intro to Ableton Live
This 3-hour workshop will cover the fundamentals of working with Ableton Live, including the Session and Arrangement view, warping and editing audio, beat-making and synthesis with Ableton instruments, and exploring Ableton’s vast effects library. This is a great introduction to Ableton Live with producer Jef Stott.
PERFORMING AND DJ-ING IN ABLETON LIVE
In this 3-hour workshop, students will learn how to use the powerful tools of Ableton Live onstage and in the DJ booth. Instructor Jef Stott will explain and demonstrate best practices for building DJ sets, focusing on track organization and optimization, creating custom effects racks and controls, as well as setting up DJ hardware and controllers. The class will also cover using Ableton onstage to bring sound design and electronics to your live set, performing live with software instruments, creating beats in real time, and live looping, all within Ableton.
RECORDING AND MIXING IN ABLETON
The 3-hour class will cover the workflow of recording and mixing in Ableton Live. Students will learn how to set up home studio recording sessions and best practices for recording instruments and vocals in Ableton, including using multiple takes and edits for a finished professional recording. The workshop will also cover the powerful mixing tools within Ableton Live including effects, automation and using VST plugins. This is highly recommended for any producer wanting to take their Ableton Live projects to the next level!
