This three-part series explores the intersection of songwriting and music production, helping songwriters build the skills to become full-fledged producers. Taught by songwriter and producer Pablo Quintero, each class is designed to function as a standalone creative experience, while also building progressively for students who attend all three. In every class, students engage in a mini song-creation process that integrates songwriting, beat-making, and production. Through collaborative, project-based learning, participants develop skills in lyric writing, melody and song structure, beat-making, software instruments, recording, and mixing.

THE CRAFT OF SONGWRITING: LYRICS, MELODY & STRUCTURE

This three-hour workshop will guide new songwriters through the process of developing their musical ideas from scratch.  Working with an in-class group song-writing project, the class will focus on writing lyrics, creating the “story” or arc of the piece, and setting lyrics to a new melody. Through this process, students will also be introduced to techniques for building simple beats and creating musical foundations to support their lyrical ideas.

SAT APR 10 • 10:30AM-1:30PM • Joe Henderson Lab

BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS: BEAT-MAKING, MIDI & ARRANGEMENT

The second class in this series will focus deeper on the music production skills of creating beats, working with samples and software instruments, and arranging a track using MIDI and audio editing to support the songwriting process. Songwriting concepts (storyline development, arrangement, etc.) will continue to be applied as students shape their own musical ideas into a more complete project. This class provides important knowledge for songwriters who wish to master producing their own tracks.

SAT APR 17 • 10:30AM-1:30PM • Joe Henderson Lab

FROM INSPIRATION TO FINAL MIX: RECORDING & MIXING FUNDAMENTALS

The third class in this series will focus on how to shape and present musical ideas as a finished demo. Students will learn the skills of recording vocals and instruments in a home studio environment, how to edit the recordings, and the use of effects to polish the sounds recorded in class. The fundamentals of mixing will be explained using real world examples of industry best practices. This class is an excellent step towards learning how to complete and polish a musical idea in a home studio environment.
