An utterly original improviser and composer who turns each piece into a thrilling ride, Japanese-born pianist Hiromi reunites with her power-packed Trio Project, featuring drumming phenomenon Simon Phillips and electric bass master James Genus, who picks up the mantle from the late genius Anthony Jackson.
From 2011 to 2016, this supercharged band released four albums that stretched the boundaries of the possible, forging a dynamic that transcended their matchless individual abilities to form a cohesive group approach in which no instrument is confined to its traditional role. “I want to treat the three instruments as three pieces of an orchestra, and extend the sound,” Hiromi said of the project.
Phillips, whose remarkable résumé includes stints with Brian Eno, Jeff Beck, Stanley Clarke, Toto, The Who, and his own fusion ensemble Protocol, is a whirlwind of rhythm who brings limitless power, symphonic expanse, and jawdropping dexterity to his role.
James Genus is among the most in-demand rhythm section musicians on earth. A current member of the Saturday Night Live band and Herbie Hancock’s quintet, he’s a veteran of work with Horace Silver, Michael Brecker, and Dave Douglas whose deep foundation and lithe melodicism is a perfect match for Phillips and Hiromi.
