SFJAZZ Collective bassist Matt Brewer has emerged as one of the most respected and versatile musicians of his generation, known for his deeply melodic playing, rhythmic sophistication, and broad collaborative range. For his night as part of the SFJAZZ Collective Spotlight Series, Brewer performs with his razor-sharp quintet, featuring Oakland-born trumpet phenom Ambrose Akinmusire and legendary pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
Born in Oklahoma City and raised in Albuquerque in a family of musicians, Brewer studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy before joining the inaugural class of the Juilliard Jazz Program. Over the last two decades, he has built an extensive résumé performing and recording with artists including Vijay Iyer, Steve Coleman, Antonio Sánchez, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
Brewer’s quintet with Akinmusire and Rubalcaba highlights the bassist's compositional depth and interactive approach to improvisation. The group combines Rubalcaba’s harmonic brilliance and Akinmusire’s emotionally charged trumpet language with Brewer’s supple bass lines and expansive rhythmic concepts, resulting in music that is both adventurous and lyrical. Brewer’s leadership emphasizes collective interplay rather than virtuosity alone, reflecting his reputation as a musician equally valued for sensitivity, imagination, and ensemble cohesion.
