Few artists embody the pulse of Latin jazz like Poncho Sánchez, a conguero whose hands seem to translate history into rhythm. He makes his first appearance at the SFJAZZ Center with this performance, joined by the latest iteration of his Latin Band.
Born in Texas and raised in Southern California, Sánchez emerged from a rich blend of Afro-Cuban traditions and bebop influences, eventually becoming one of the most influential percussionists in jazz. His early mentorship under vibraphonist Cal Tjader positioned him at the heart of a lineage that includes giants like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaría—artists who helped define the genre he now carries forward.
With his band, Sánchez forged a sound that is both scholarly and electrifying: tight horn lines, driving congas, and an irresistible groove that merges jazz sophistication with street-level soul. Over decades and more than 20 albums, he has transformed Latin jazz into a living, evolving conversation, earning a GRAMMY and global acclaim.
His latest project, Poncho Sánchez & His Latin Jazz Band Live at the Belly Up Tavern, captures that vitality in real time. The album delivers fresh arrangements and the kinetic energy of a live performance, proving that Sánchez’s music is not archival—it is alive, urgent, and still expanding.
In every strike of the drum, Poncho Sánchez doesn’t just play Latin jazz—he sustains its heartbeat.
