Roopa Mahadevan and her ensemble Roopa in Flux have emerged as one of the most adventurous voices in contemporary global music, blending Carnatic classical traditions with jazz, soul, free improvisation, and experimental sound. A second-generation Indian American artist raised in the Bay Area, Mahadevan trained rigorously in South Indian classical vocal music before expanding her artistic language through collaborations across jazz, dance, theater, and interdisciplinary performance. Her work is rooted equally in virtuosity and fearless innovation, creating music that feels both deeply ancestral and unmistakably modern.
Mahadevan’s accomplishments span prestigious stages including SFJAZZ, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was a featured soloist on Christopher Tin’s GRAMMY-winning album Calling All Dawns and has collaborated with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Sunny Jain, George Brooks, and Karsh Kale.
Roopa in Flux’s latest work continues to push boundaries through emotionally charged improvisation, intricate rhythmic interplay, and contemporary storytelling centered on migration, identity, and joy. In 2023, the ensemble opened for Red Baraat at SFJAZZ’s Festival of Colors concert, delivering a dynamic performance that introduced new audiences to Mahadevan’s electrifying cross-cultural vision.
