“A bundle of energy that expertly marries the organic and synthetic” (Everything is Noise), the electro-acoustic fusion juggernaut Sungazer is the brainchild of bass virtuoso Adam Neely and mind-bending drummer Shawn Crowder. Formed in 2014, the Brooklyn-based group brings together bewildering time signatures and 8-bit style EDM with masterful instrumental prowess on a range of material including tracks from their most recent album, Against the Fall of Night.
From the outset, Sungazer has challenged the boundaries separating jazz fusion, progressive rock, and electronic production, creating music that feels simultaneously cerebral and visceral. Neely’s elastic bass lines weave through Crowder’s hyper-detailed polyrhythms with astonishing precision, yet the duo never sacrifices groove for technicality. Instead, their compositions thrive on tension and release, balancing virtuosic complexity with infectious melodies and digitally inspired textures.
Against the Fall of Night represents the clearest realization of Sungazer’s artistic philosophy to date. Across the album, shimmering synthesizers collide with explosive drumming, while intricate rhythmic modulations transform each track into an unpredictable sonic journey. By combining internet-age electronic aesthetics with improvisational sophistication, the band has carved out a singular identity that continues reshaping expectations for contemporary instrumental music. Their fearless experimentation ensures fusion remains innovative, relevant, and resonant.
