Original show description below.

Beyond his masterful musicianship, Ambrose Akinmusire possesses an unrivaled gift for collaboration. His third night as Resident Artistic Director will be devoted to a duo performance with the iconic bassist, composer, and 1998 NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter. One of the greatest bassists in jazz history, the two-time GRAMMY winner is also the most recorded, holding a Guinness record for his 2200+ recording credits over his six-decade career.

The Michigan native began his professional career in 1959 with drummer/leader Chico Hamilton, and gained fame for his five-year stint as part of Miles Davis’ “Second Great Quintet,” of the mid-60s, appearing on the classic albums ESP, Miles Smiles, Nefertiti, Seven Steps to Heaven, Four & More, and Filles de Kilimanjaro among others. As his overwhelming discography would suggest, he has recorded with nearly every major jazz artist working since the 1960s, and had extensive affiliations with George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Hank Jones, Wayne Shorter, and McCoy Tyner. Beyond jazz, Carter is known for work with artists ranging from Roberta Flack and Gil-Scott Heron to A Tribe Called Quest.
He made his debut as a bandleader in 1961, and has recorded 45 albums. This night is the first time the two generations of jazz giants share the stage as a duo, and will truly be a night to remember.

ABOUT AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE
The most distinctive trumpeter of our era, Oakland-reared Akinmusire plays with a dark-hued and gleaming tone. He merges straight ahead jazz with rappers and string quartets, “throwing out all the cliches to arrive at a fresh conception” (San Jose Mercury News). A Blue Note recording artist, Akinmusire pushes fearlessly forward – and is sought out by such legends as Jack DeJohnette and Kendrick Lamar.

At a young age, I wanted to — and I still want to — be Ron Carter. I want to grow up and have the integrity that he has. I mean everything he says, every note he plays has so much integrity and beauty in it
