Original show description below.
Led by Oakland bassist, composer and creative catalyst Caroline Chung, Citizens Jazz brings together some of the most versatile and imaginative players on the Bay Area scene. Chung made her SFJAZZ debut in January 2022 with a Hotplate Festival performance exploring Nina Simone’s classic 1967 RCA Victor album Silk & Soul. She’s widening the focus on her return engagement with a program celebrating the music of women composers who have made immense and often underappreciated contributions to the music, both in the past and on the contemporary scene.
From Mary Lou Williams, Alice Coltrane, Peggy Lee and Carla Bley to Betty Davis, Sade and Gretchen Parlato, Chung showcases some of the treasures she’s gleaned in recent years. An accomplished songwriter and composer in her own right, she earned widespread notice with her 2021 debut album Sounds of Haejin, a stylistically encompassing program featuring SF Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, vocalist Lilan Kane, and guitarist Khalil Doak-Anthony (a key Chung collaborator who provides Citizens Jazz with a prodigious dose of funk).
